Mr. Memory believes that the
principles of music are the same for Bach as they are for Ellington. He also believes that to
be a well-rounded musician, you need to know how to play all
styles.
In the community orchestras Thara
works with, in which many of the musicians come from a purely
classical background, he dedicates time to teaching jazz
technique and theory. Playing
jazz can improve anyone's musical skills, so he nurtures
self-confidence through the opportunities for solos during
performances. For musicians grounded in jazz, he makes sure
they get to read and perform diverse works by some of the
great classical composers of the world.
Thara says, “Through my interest in
working with the community, I look for ways to make music more
accessible to more people. Everyone, young and old, should
have complete access to music making. Just like there's a
Starbucks on every corner, there should be places in every
neighborhood for people to enjoy all kinds of music—community
spaces that are available to everyone, no matter what age or
background.”
As Thara continues his work in
community music, his plans include more programs targeted at
children and youth, particularly in areas where schools have
cut arts programs and where the kids are increasingly
"at-risk."
Diminuendo Wind
Orchestra The Diminuendo Wind Orchestra could be
called an example of "the orchestra of the future." This
ensemble is grounded in the diverse works of Beethoven, Duke
Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Eddie Harris, James Brown and
William Grant Still, as well as in original works and
arrangements by Northwest composers. Some members of this
orchestra perform with renowned jazz bands, such as the Mel
Brown Sextet; others have been more involved in classical
music, with such groups as the Oregon Symphony and the
Portland Festival Orchestra. Click here for more
information on the Diminuendo Wind Orchestra.
Pacific Crest
Sinfonietta The Pacific Crest Sinfonietta is a
growing and thriving community orchestra originally founded as
a student orchestra. The sinfonietta has since evolved to
include students, amateurs and professionals ranging in age
from pre-teens to retirees. One of the basic tenets of the
Sinfonietta is to develop the individual talents and strengths
of each member. Performances are held for the general public
at least two times a year. Visit www.pcsorchestra.org
for more information on Pacific Crest Sinfonietta.
Black History
Month Each year, Thara brings together a unique
group of performers to participate in a musical observance of
Black History Month. The program, directed by Thara, includes
material blending West African elements with those of Europe,
the U.S. and Latin America. “Once you get a chance to hear or
perform compositions by African-American composers, you become
part of a healing future,” says
Memory. |
